Mayfield: A Saga

It’s Official

Martha just couldn’t resist. “Now now…Hesty. You looked just like her on the day you first set foot on the Remmington’s front door step. I remember that day well,” she said as sweet as could be, although she was dying of laughter on the inside as she saw the horrified look on Hester’s face.

“And just what is that supposed to mean, Martha?” she spat, her voice full of anger.

“Now don’t go getting your petticoat in a bunch,” Martha giggled. “You weren’t exactly high class when you were asking Mr. Remmington for a job.”

Martha gives Hesty a hard time

Hester blanched at that. “Well…I certainly did not look like I had just stepped out of a brothel!”

“And neither does that young woman in there,” Martha answered curtly, referring to the young woman who was now speaking to Albus Remmington in the sitting parlor. “She looks to be a beautiful girl, the likes of which I haven’t seen since dear, sweet Mrs. Susanna was alive; just a little down on her luck I reckon. And you would do well to not judge a book by its cover…Hesty,” she said with a wink.

Before Hester could reply, Martha handed her the tea tray and pushed her out the door. She then picked up the plate of cakes, and followed Hester to the parlor where Mr. Remmington and his guest were seated near the fireplace.

“Here you are, Mr. Remmington sir,” Martha said as she handed one of the steaming cakes to him.

Martha gives Albus a cake

“Ah yes! Thank you my dears,” Mr. Remmington answered with a bright smile as Hester poured him a cup of tea. He lifted the steaming cake to his lips and took a generous bite. “Mmm, my…yes,” he said, closing his eyes in delight. “Martha…you are unbelievably talented. Do try one, child,” he said as he motioned to the girl on his left.
