Mayfield: A Saga

It’s Official

Ellie took a cake from Martha and gave her an appreciative smile. Trying to remember her manners even though she was starving, she took a small, delicate bite. “Oh thank you, miss. It is most delicious!” she said, looking up at the gentle face of the cook.

“My pleasure, my dear. And please, call me Martha,” she gave a warm smile to the girl as she heard Hester give a little snigger from behind her.

Ellie tries a piece of cake

“Hester, where are your manners? Aren’t you going to give our guest a cup of tea?” Mr. Remmington said with a laugh.

Hester looked at him for a second, unbelieving. “But sir…we don’t even know who she is…or where she comes from! I hardly think —”

“Of course I know who she is!” he exclaimed. Martha noticed a look of surprise and fear on Ellie’s face a she sat staring at Mr. Remmington, waiting for him to continue. “She is Ellie Brown.” Once again, Martha watched Ellie and noticed a relieved expression sweep over her face. “And she is from —,” he looked at Ellie inquiringly.

Albus proves he knows Ellie

Ellie took a bite of cake to try to buy herself some time. She hadn’t thought about how to answer this question yet, even though she knew it was coming. “Oak Vale,” she said quickly, placing her empty plat on the center table. “My father was a carpenter,” she added nonchalantly.

“See there!” Mr. Remmington announced brightly. “She is Ellie Brown, from Oak Vale; a carpenter’s daughter.”

“Now may she have some tea…Hesty?” Martha asked in a rather amused tone.

Hester just glared at Martha, and handed a cup of tea to Ellie rather roughly. Ellie took the cup and gave Hester a little smile. “Thank you, miss,” she said as she took a long sip of the wonderful, soothing liquid.
