< -- A New Girl in Town

Her New Home –>

“I suppose I should formally introduce you all. Girls, this is Ellie Brown as we have already distinguished, ” he said with a bemused look in Hester’s direction. “She will be joining our household and lending a hand,” he paused to wait for Hester’s reaction. She merely stared at him in disbelief. “I shall discuss her position and duties with my son when he returns from town. Until then, you two can show her around the house,” he continued.

“Miss Brown, may I introduce you to Miss Martha Boggins and Miss Hester Wendell. Martha has been in my service for the last 15 years. My, where does the time go?” he said affectionately, casting a warm smile to Martha, which she returned just as brightly. “And Hester has been with us for going on 9 years now. Isn’t that right…Hesty?” the old man laughed, patting Hester on the back. Ellie heard Martha give a little giggle, and turned to give her a smile. Martha gave her a small wink. “Well, I s’pose I shall leave you three to get acquainted!” Mr. Remmington said as he stood and walked toward the doorway. “Oh, yes, how silly of me to forget. Hester,” he said as he turned around in the doorway. “Please show Ellie to her room, and help her find a suitable dress from the closet. I do believe they would have been about the same size.” This time both Hester and Martha looked shocked.

“Sir, you don’t mean to give her Mrs. Susanna’s room? And clothing?!” Hester asked, a look of horror on her face. Martha’s look said much of the same thing, but she gave Ellie a reassuring smile.

“Where else do you expect her to sleep? Now, please do as I ask Hester,” he said firmly. It was the first time Ellie had seen him without a smile on his face.

“Very well sir,” Hester said quietly, averting her gaze to the floor. “Follow me, Miss Brown.”

Ellie rose from her warm seat by the fire, and cast a quick, questioning glance at Martha. There were tears in Martha’s eyes, she was sure. But Martha put on a warm smile and nodded to Ellie as if to say, “Go on dearie. All is well.” Ellie gave a unsure smile in reply and followed Hester out of the parlor.
