Mayfield: A Saga

Her New Home

As Ellie followed Hester out of the parlor and up the wide staircase, she couldn’t help but ponder the meaning of the words she had just heard. “What did Hester mean when she asked Mr. Remmington if I was to be given Susanna’s room…and clothes?” Ellie thought to herself as she emerged from the top of the staircase. “Surely Mrs. Susanna needs her room and clothing, unless of course we are to share.” She followed Hester around the corner and came to a halt as Hester took a ring of keys from her pocket and unlocked the deep cherry wood door in front of them.

“Will I receive a key to this room as well?” Ellie asked as Hester went to put the key into the keyhole.

Hester turned around to look Ellie straight in the eye. By the look on her face, Ellie could tell that the woman did not particularly care for her. After an awkward silence in which Hester merely glared at Ellie, she finally opened her mouth to speak. “There will be no need for keys to this room; now that it will not be locked any further.”

“Not locked any further?” Ellie asked, suddenly very curious. “Why was it locked before then?”

Hester merely pursed her lips and looked at Ellie rather disgustedly. “You are a nosy little prat, now aren’t you?” And with that, she turned the golden door knob and opened the door. “Your room,” Hester said through clenched teeth. She stood aside and waited for Ellie to enter.

  3. Yay, you’re back! I love it… and I hope that Ellie *does* give Mr. Remmington a little thrill, ha ha. He’s sweet.

  5. Wonderful job on this story! I love the decor and everything in the pictures, too. And wow, Hesty is eeevil! Or at least extremely unkind. The way you describe her behavior is great — I could feel her cackling coldness. Can’t wait to see what happens at dinner!
