Her New Home

Mr. Remmington’s Son –>

Ellie was completely confused. She was about to ask another question when Martha entered the room. “I came running as quickly as I could when I heard that horrible sound! Sounded like someone was battling with Death himself!” Martha exclaimed, casting a subtle wink to Ellie. She took a moment to look around the room. Ellie could have sworn she saw Martha wipe a tear from her eye. “I should have known it was you…Hesty! We really ought to work on that laugh of yours,” she said turning to give Hester an exaggerated smile.

Ellie and Martha couldn’t help but giggle about the spiteful look on Hester’s face. But Hester drew herself up and in a calm voice said, “I am surprised you were able to run up the stairs, Martha. A woman of your size must have a hard enough time simply standing, much less walking or running.”

Martha let out a genuinely warm laugh. “Oh my Hesty, you are getting better at your insults! That one was extremely well thought-out!” She wiped her eyes and turned toward Ellie. “Mr. Remmington sent me, my dear, to invite you to share dinner with him this evening in the dining room. Tomorrow your duties will begin, but tonight is to be a night of rest and relaxation!” her eyes sparkled with kindness and laughter.

Martha gives a message to Ellie

Ellie’s heart leapt at the prospect of a real meal. It had been so long since she had last had one. “Oh thank you Martha! Do tell him that I will be honored to dine with him,” Ellie said with a smile. “Oh my! I should have to wash up before dinner, shan’t I?”

Martha laughed. “Have you picked out a dress yet, dear?”

They both looked to Hester who seemed to have been frozen with shock. She was still standing by the open bureau, unmoving.

Hester is in shock

“Well Hesty, I think Ellie can pick out her own attire! Let’s leave the girl to get ready for dinner! You have an hour, my child. Hesty will be back up for you at that time.” Martha walked out of the room, humming to herself with Hester close behind.

“Nothing too fancy, mind you,” Hester said as she stopped at the door. “You are just a servant after all.” And with that, she walked out leaving Ellie alone in her new room.

Ellie is left to get ready

  3. Yay, you’re back! I love it… and I hope that Ellie *does* give Mr. Remmington a little thrill, ha ha. He’s sweet.

  5. Wonderful job on this story! I love the decor and everything in the pictures, too. And wow, Hesty is eeevil! Or at least extremely unkind. The way you describe her behavior is great — I could feel her cackling coldness. Can’t wait to see what happens at dinner!
